Babar Azam led Pakistan becomes one of the worst-performing teams of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 who still waits to register their first victory of the tournament.
After facing a shocking defeat against United States, Pakistan was expected to make a bounce back in their arch-rival game against India. But India’s aggressive bowling attack scattered the hope of winning the game.
Pakistan lost the low-scoring thriller game by 6 runs in New York and got to the verge of getting eliminated from the group stage. All participating teams have been divided into five teams of four groups.
Pakistan has been placed in Group A alongside India, United States, Canada and Ireland.
India and the United States won their first two matches and positioned at the top of the points table with a positive NRR while Canada won a game out of the two they played. Pakistan and Ireland who played two matches so far, failed to register a single victory.
Pakistan Super 8 Chances, Qualification Scenario
With two games left for each team, Pakistan and Ireland’s chances of qualifying for the next stage seem slim.
With 0 points from two matches, Pakistan have to pray for some dramatic incidents to happen to qualify for the Super 8 round.
The Babar Azam-led side will have to win their two remaining matches against Canada and Ireland while hoping that United States and Canada do not win any more games.
Even if Pakistan win both of their matches and United States lose their two remaining games, the qualification to the Super 8 stage will come down to Net Run Rate (NRR). Both sides will have 4 points from 4 matches and Pakistan will need several results to go their way.
Pakistan will play their next group match of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 against Canada on June 11 in Nassau County International Cricket Stadium, New York. Pakistan has to win this game with a higher NRR to stay alive in the Super 8 race while a defeat will worsen things.
