    Pakistan fined for slow over rate against South Africa in Cape Town test

    Pakistan Cricket team has been handed a fine and docked five WTC points for a slow over-rate against South Africa.

    Pakistan players have been fined 25 percent of their match fee for failing to meet the minimum quota of overs in the allotted time during the second Test in Cape Town.

    Furthermore, five World Test Championship points were deducted from the team’s account after they were ruled to be five overs short of the mark, with time allowances taken into consideration.

    The penalties have been levelled after Pakistan’s 10-wicket defeat against the Proteas in the second Test.

    The sanctions are as per Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to minimum over-rate offences, players are fined five per cent of their match fee for every over their side fails to bowl in the allotted time.

    The five WTC points were deducted as per Article 16.11.2 of the ICC World Test Championship playing conditions, which state that a side is penalised one point for each over short.

    The charges were levied by on-field umpires Kumar Dharmasena and Nitin Menon, third umpire Alex Wharf and fourth umpire Stephen Harris while Richie Richardson of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referee sanctioned the penalties. Pakistan captain Shan Masood accepted the same and pleaded guilty to the offence.

    During the Pakistan tour of South Africa 2024-25, a total of 3 T20Is, 3 ODIs and a couple of tests were scheduled to be played between 10 December 2024 and 7 January 2025. SA won the T20I series by 2-0 while the visitors won all three matches of the ODI series.

    In the two-match test series, South Africa won the first match by 2 wickets and qualified for the WTC 2023-25 final while Pakistan was expected to draw the series with a victory n their second test but the hosts won the game by 10 wickets.

    Speaking of the second test, South Africa scored a mammoth 615 in their first inning while Pakistan scored just 194 in their first inning. In the follow-on inning, Pakistan’s opening batters made an impressive start by adding a whopping 205 runs for the first wicket.

    During the process, Shan Masood scored his sixth test century which also turned out to be the first in test against South Africa. With the 205-run partnership, Babar Azam and Shan Masood script multiple records.

    With Rabada and Maharaj’s three wickets haul each, South Africa contained Pakistan for 478 runs while David Bedingham and Aiden Markram scored the needed runs in the second inning and won the game by 10 wickets.
