The right arm pacer Kyle Alex Jamieson has suffered a hamstring injury after returning from Bangladesh. With his availability for the ODI series to be unknown, New Zealand Cricket has taken precautions by adding Ben Sears as a cover for the first ODI match.
New Zealand is set to play in a three-match ODI series Bangladesh tour of New Zealand 2023 starting on Sunday. After completing the test series 1-1, both sides are set to face each other in the ODI series. He dismissed two wickets during the Test matches and scored a total of 52 runs in three innings.
On this occasion, the New Zealand head coach spoke about the player’s injury and added Sears as the cover.
“We’re taking a cautious approach with Kyle,” New Zealand coach Gary Stead said. “We don’t want to rush or push him back, particularly at the very start of our home summer.”
“He could play if absolutely necessary but we don’t want to take any unnecessary risks, hence calling in Ben for this first match. Ben’s familiar to the team environment and it’s been good to see him back at full fitness for the [Wellington] Firebirds.”
The 25-year-old Sears hasn’t made his ODI debut and has been part of the ODI squad for the Chappell-Hardlee series against Australia. He also played 6 T20I matches for the side and bagged 36 wickets in 29 List A matches he played at an average of 33.77 and an economy of 5.62.
After leveling the Test series 1-1, New Zealand will be looking for a victory in the first ODI match which will be played on December 17 at University Oval, New Zealand.
