Nic Maddinson Joins Sydney Thunder for BBL 2025

The former Melbourne Renegades captain Nic Maddinson will be joining Sydney Thunder for BBL 2025 on a one-year deal. The left-hand batter has played three tests and 6 T20Is for Australia and will be returning to Sydney after six years in Melbourne franchises.

The 32-year-old was part of the Sydney Sixers, which won the Big Bash League title in 2012. Maddinson has scored 2046 runs which includes 10 fifties. He also joined the New South Wales Blues ahead of the 2024/25 season.

After David Warner signed a deal with Thunder, the addition of Maddinson will bolster the top order in the squad. He will be playing alongside England WK-keeper Sam Billings and rising star Ollie Davies at the Thunder.

“(I’m) looking forward to coming back to Sydney,” said Maddinson on joining the club. “The squad that we’ve got is going to be really competitive. It’s a good mix of older players, and having a younger crop of players coming through is really exciting.

“The goal for myself is to be consistent, find a gameplan that works, and slot into the Thunder batting line-up for a full season. Hopefully (I can) learn some stuff about T20 but also teach a few things I’ve learned along the way,” concluded Maddinson.

Thunder completed the last season at the bottom of the table as they won only one out of ten games and will be looking for a comeback in the upcoming season. meanwhile, Sydney Thunder General Manager Trent Copeland said that Maddison’s addition will bring further depth and experience to the batting side.

“‘Maddo’ has been around the game a long time and has played international cricket,” Copeland said. “Everyone knows what he can do with the bat, but what is also really exciting is what he can bring in terms of experience and leadership in any part of a match or the season as a whole.

“We expect to be challenging for the BBL title this season and Maddo, as someone who has won a BBL, is a big part of those plans.”

The Sydney Thunder have one domestic and two overseas player spots to fill ahead of BBL|14. Sydney Thunder will be playing their first match against Perth Scorchers on January 03 at Optus Stadium.
