The Chennai-born Murali Vijay has announced retirement from all forms of international cricket on January 30, 2023. Murali Vijay was a regular member of the Indian Test team until 2018 and plays for Tamil Nadu in domestic first-class cricket.

After failing his 12th class exam, M Vijay started playing cricket at the age of 17. Vijay played club cricket in Chennai before he was selected for the Tamil Nadu Under-22 team.
He quickly came up the ranks and made his first-class debut for the Tamil Nadu senior team in 2006. He was one of the top run-scorers of the 2006-07 Ranji Trophy, which was his maiden first-class tournament. The 38-year-old opening batter made his international debut on November 6, 2008 against Australia.
Murali Vijay made his announcement in social media where he wrote: “Today, with immense gratitude & humility, I announce my retirement from all forms of International cricket. My journey from 2002-2018 has been the most wonderful years of my life for it was an honour representing India at the highest level of sport.
I am grateful for the opportunities given to me by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA), Chennai Super Kings and Chemplast Sanmar.
To all my team-mates, coaches, mentors and support staff: It has been an absolute privilege to have played with you all, and, I thank you all for helping turn my dream into reality.
To cricket fans that have supported me through the ups & downs of international sport, I will forever cherish the moments I spent with you all and your support has always be a source of motivation for me.
Lastly, I would like to thank my family & friends for their unconditional love and support throughout my career. They have been my backbone and without them, I would not have been able to achieve what I have today.
I am excited to announce that I will be exploring new opportunities in the world of cricket & the business side of it, where I will also continue to participate in the sport that I love and challenge myself in new and different environments. I believe that this is the next step in my journey as a cricketer and I look forward to this new chapter in my life.

Murali Vijay played his last international match on December 14, 2018 against Australia in a Test match. Murali Vijay so far played for India, Chennai Super Kings, Tamil Nadu, India Blue, Rest of India, India B, India A, Indians, Delhi Capitals, South Zone, Punjab Kings, India Green, Lyca Kovai Kings, Ruby Trichy Warriors, Essex, Somerset.
Murali Vijay in his international career played 61 Tests, 17 ODIs, and 9 T20Is and scored 3982, 339, and 169 runs respectively which includes 12 hundred.
