“There is a Lot of Time” MS Dhoni on his IPL future

MS Dhoni has decided to wait and watch approach before deciding on his IPL future. With the IPL owners in discussion on the auction and retention plans ahead of the 2024 season of the tournament, the former CSK captain MS Dhoni what changes in the rule will be implemented, before deciding whether to feature in another season or not.

“There is a lot of time for it. We have to see what decision they take on player retention etc. Right now, the ball is not in our court.

“So, once the rules and regulations get formalized, I will take a call, but needs to be in the best interest of the team.”

The discussions on Dhoni’s future at the IPL have been cropped between the seasons for a few years now, and one part of those questions regarding the succession plan at CSK was answered earlier this year when Ruturaj Gaikwad was named CSK captain days before the season started.

In 2023 Dhoni underwent knee surgery following the IPL season, where he led CSK to victory in the final, defeating Gujarat Titans. CSK missed the playoff chances under Gaikwad when they finished fifth on the points table IPL 2024 season.

Dhoni has been impressive in the role of hitting sixes in death overs last season. He mostly came to bat in the crucial moments of CSK innings and smashed 13 sixes and 14 fours in the 73 balls he faced across the season. His strike rate was 220.54 the first season where he struck at over 200 and he finished unbeaten in eight in 11 innings.

BCCI had a meeting with franchise owners on July 31 in Mumbai to discuss a host of rules. The meeting agenda included discussions on the Impact Player Rule, the number of players retention, and the frequency of the mega auction.
