The PCB chief Mohsin Naqvi will likely take over the ACC president following an official meeting in October-November later this year. He will succeed Jay Shah after the latter was named as ICC chairman.
The leadership changes align with ACC’s rotation policy in the Presidency. “When the ACC meets later this year, it will confirm that Naqvi will be the next president for a two-year term,” the PTI source quoted. “When Jay Shah steps down, the PCB chief will take over.”
Jay Shah has served as president of the ACC for four years having received an extension for a one-year term following the original three-year spell. Jay Shah was unanimously elected ICC chairman and will take over in December.
Naqvi’s two-year term will see him oversee the Asia Cup in 2025, which will be hosted in India. As a PCB chief and ACC president, Naqvi will also play in the upcoming role ICC Champions Trophy, which will be played in Pakistan in 2025.
Pakistan team has traveled to India last year to play in ODI World Cup after visiting the country in 2011 for ODi World Cup and 2016 for the T20 World Cup.
Naqvi was elected as chairman of PCB in February 2024 and also serves as Pakistan’s minister from March 2024. His nomination will be his third major role within the calendar year.
Naqvi will be facing a contentious scenario regarding the Indian National team’s participation in the Champions Trophy on Pakistan soil. The Indian team has not played in Pakistan since 2008.
India’s move on the Champions Trophy will be the base for Pakistan travelling to India for Asia Cup in next year.
The PCB chief has received criticism after a difficult start to his tenure including Pakistan’s loss in the first test match of this series against Bangladesh and the side’s elimination from the T20 World Cup in the group stage after a loss against the USA.
