The GT20 Canada franchise Vancouver Knights has named Mohammad Rizwan as the captain for the upcoming season.
Mohammad Rizwan Named as Vancouver Knights captain
Vancouver Knights have preferred Rizwan to lead the side for the GT Canada 2024 ahead of Babar Azam. Rizwan who has captained Multan Sultans has led the side to victory in the Pakistan Super League. Meanwhile, Babar Azam is the captain of the national team and also leads Peshawar Zalmi in the PSL.
“The Vancouver Knights have chosen their captain for GT20 Season 4: Sir Mohammad Rizwan. With his exceptional batting skills and sharp wicketkeeping, he’s ready to lead us to victory. Get ready, Knights!” said the franchise in the statement.
Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan are the four Pakistan cricketers in their squad, along with Mohammad Amir and Asif Ali. The squad also includes some big names from international games, Dwaine Pretorius, Sandeep Lamichhane, Dipendra Singh Airee, Paul van Meekeren, and Ruben Trumpelmann.
Vancouver Knights emerged as champions in the inaugural season of the league in 2018 while the Winnipeg Hawks claimed the title in 2019. The Montegral Tigers are the current champions of the league after defeating the Knights in the 2023 Champions match.
Babar Azam has been facing difficult times recently, as the side has been knocked out in the group stages of the T20 World Cup 2024. They lost their first match against the USA and suffered a defeat at the hands of their rivals India where the men in blues won by 6 runs.
Pakistan defeated Canada and Ireland, but the wins were not enough for them to advance to the second round. Babar Azam scored 122 runs at an average of 40.66 and a strike rate of 101.66 with a top score of 44. He was criticized by former cricketers for their poor campaign in the tournament.
Coming to the tournament, Vancouver Knights and Toronto Nationals will play in the first match of the GT20 Canada 2024 on July 25 at CAA Centre, Brampton, Ontario.
