Former England captain Michael Vaughan sees Rohit Sharma finding a new home in CSK after the mega auction in 2025.
Michael Vaughan Opens on Rohit Sharma’s IPL Career
Former England cricketer Michael Vaughan said he wanted MI to retain Rohit Sharma as MI’s captain for the remaining season of IPL 2024. He said that he feels that Rohit Sharma will play for Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2025 and Ruturaj Gaikwad‘s captain stint might only be for 2024.
Vaughan said Rohit might be the ideal replacement for someone like MS Dhoni where CSK look to continue their rich legacy after the mega auction. All eyes will be on the mega auction as IPL 2025 is set to have a new start.
He also spoke about MS Dhoni‘s future in the IPL. Dhoni hinted last year that IPL 2024 will be his last season as a player. On the eve of the tournament’s first match where CSK faced RCB, Dhoni stepped down from captaincy and handed over the reins to young opener Ruturaj Gaikwad.
“I think he will go to Chennai, and replace MS Dhoni. Gaikwad is doing it this year. Do you think it’s just a holding job? Maybe Rohit next year?” told Vaughan.
“I see him in Chennai. I see him there. If he were to captain Chennai and came to Mumbai, would he get booed?” said Vaughan.
The host of the podcast Ranveer Allahbadia replied that It’d be absolutely heart-rending if that were to transpire. Ranveer opined that it’d be much better if Rohit Sharma goes over to play for the Sunrisers Hyderabad, owing to him already featured for Deccan Chargers from 2008 to 2010.
“That’d be heartbreaking, honestly. For MI fans, that’d be terrible. I wouldn’t mind him going to (Sunrisers) Hyderabad; he played for Deccan Chargers, so that would be romantic,” Ranveer said.
Vaughan added “He has been asked to captain Mumbai Indians; who is going to say no to that? He has been given a job that every single Indian cricketer would like to do.”
“I just believe the communication wasn’t right. I personally would’ve captained Rohit. The sensible move would’ve been for Rohit to carry on as MI captain with Hardik in mind for next year or 2.”
In the tournament, CSK won three out of five matches they played and secured 4th position in the IPL 2024 points table.
Chennai Super Kings will be playing their next match against Mumbai Indians on April 14 at Wankhede Stadium.
