The right-hand batter Angelo Mathews was dismissed on a time-out during the match between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh in Delhi.
First batter to be timed out in International Cricket
Sri Lanka is scheduled to play the 38th match in the World Cup 2023 against Bangladesh at Arun Jaitley Stadium. During the first innings of the match, the all-rounder Angelo Mathews was sent out on a time-out due to his broken helmet strap.
With this dismissal, he becomes the first batter to be dismissed on a time-out in International cricket.
According to the ICC rules for the World Cup, ‘the incoming batter should be ready to bat within two minutes of a dismissal or a batter retiring’. He was preparing to take strike after the dismissal of Sadeera Samarawickrama when his helmet strap broke.
He took more than two minutes to face a delivery and asked for a new helmet but didn’t discuss it with the opponent captain Shakib Al Hasan, who appealed to the on-field umpires in the meantime.
Angelo Mathews tried to explain the situation to Marais Erasmus and Richard Illingworth, the on-field umpires. The umpire held the appeal of the Bangladesh captain and announced the dismissal of the Sri Lankan batter due to ‘time out’.
He walked off in anger while the Bangladesh players celebrated his dismissal. Later he was seen showing the broken helmet to the head coach Chris Silverwood and threw the helmet in anger and started walking toward the dressing room.
