Mark Wood replaces Anderson in England Test Squad for West Indies

With James Anderson’s retirement after the end of the first test against the West Indies at Lord’s, England has added Mark Wood to the squad for the second test which starts on July 18 at Trent Bridge.

Wood played three tests in England’s tour of India earlier this year, which was part of England’s T20 World Cup squad and featured in five matches. He didn’t play in England’s last two matches, which included a semifinal defeat to India by 68 runs.

Wood had played 34 tests picking 108 wickets with an economy of 3.32. England secured an innings and 114 runs victory in Lords. Currently, Three Lions leads the series 1-0 against West Indies.

Gus Atkinson, the 26-year-old Surrey pacer, debuted in the Lord’s Test and picked up a total of 12 wickets notably a seven-wicket haul in the first innings followed by five in the second.

Atkinson was introduced into the attack after West Indies reached 34 for no loss. Atkinson’s second delivery was inside edged on the leg stump picking the wicket of captain Kraigg Brathwaite. He took two wickets before conceding his first run. Josh Root, Will Jacks, Rehan Ahmed, and Tom Hartley are the four players to achieve this feat before Atkinson.

Other than Anderson and Atkinson, Chris Woakes was the other pace option in the eleven in the Lord’s. Meanwhile, Ben Stokes picked three wickets and off-spinner Shoaib Bashir was also part of the eleven but did not get a single over to bowl.
