Marcus Trescothick Open to Take Full Time Coaching Role of England’s White-ball Cricket

England’s interim Head coach Marcus Trescothick is open to taking on the full-time coaching role of White-ball cricket as he is looking forward to the opportunity.

Trescothick will be the head coach of the side until the end of the T20I and ODI series against Australia next month. Trescothick is currently working with the team which is playing a test series against Sri Lanka.

He will depart during the third test and will join the white ball squads, which are set to be announced next week. Trescothick will be heading to the Utilita Bowl in Southampton ahead of the first T20I on September 11.

“It’s not something I’d ever thought about before, until I got this opportunity now. I’m not necessarily thinking any further ahead than the end of the Australia series. I’ve been very much focused on the job we’re doing here (with the Test team),” said Marcus Trescothick.

“You plan your winter: we’re off to Pakistan, then New Zealand. I’m so ingrained in that at the moment, I’ve not really sat down and said, ‘right, this is where I’ll try to go, this is what I’ll try to do’. I’m looking forward to the opportunity, for sure. I’m really excited about doing the job. We’ll work it out a little bit more from there,” he added.

Trescothick who is yet to make his head coach stint has shown interest in stepping into the role. Trescothick who retired from his playing career in 2019, spent 18 months as an assistant coach at Somerset and has been the assistant coach of the England men’s national team since 2021.

Trescothick will play a role in team selection and maintains a strong relationship with Jos Buttler, who continues as the white-ball captain.

England’s T20I series against Australia begins after the final day of the third and final test against Sri Lanka. On this occasion, Jordan Cox might get included in the T20I squad if he isn’t needed at The Oval.

“They have a busy schedule,” Trescothick commented. After Matthew Mott stepped down from the head coach position, ECB did not officially announce the white ball head coach role.

With Sangakkara and Andrew Flintoff considered a potential contender for the position, the results of next month’s assignment against Australia might pose Marcus as a strong candidate.
