Marcus Stoinis has been appointed Melbourne Stars captain for BBL 2025 and takes over from Glenn Maxwell who stepped aside at the end of BBL|13.
Stoinis will become one of the second players to notch up 100-star games this season. The batting all-rounder debuted for the Stars in BBL|03 and has become a staple of the side over the past decade.
Stoinis captained the club for one match last year in Maxwell’s absence due to injury against the Scorchers. He revealed that he was honoured to take over from Maxwell and would relish the opportunity to lead the side for BBL 2024.
“I had a little bit of a taste of captaining the side in Maxi’s absence last year and loved the opportunity so to be given the role full time is a great honour,” said Stoinis.
“The Stars have been such a constant in my life every summer for the last 10 years and I truly believe that the group we have assembled both on and off the field can bring some long overdue success to the club.”

Meanwhile Melbourne stars general manager Blair Crouch paid tribute to Maxwell’s contribution as captain.
“First of all, I want to acknowledge and thank Glenn Maxwell for all his efforts in leading the side over the past 5 seasons and he will continue to be a wonderful resource for everyone at the club.
“Marcus demonstrated his leadership ability last year and has been a senior member of the side for a long time.
“It’s wonderful to have someone who has been at the Stars almost from our inception lead our club in BBL|14.”
Stoinis signed a three-year extension at the end of last season and will become just the second player behind Maxwell to reach the 100-game milestone for the club.
He is also the club’s second leading run scorer of all time behind Maxwell and the sixth leading wicket-taker. Stoinis had a decent T20 World Cup campaign for Australia in June and hit an unbeaten 61 runs from 27 balls in his last international match against Pakistan in Hobart last month.
He recently teamed up with stars coach Peter Moores at Deccan Gladiators in the Abu Dhabi T10 competition, striking consecutive scores of 42 runs early in the tournament.
Meanwhile Stars secured Adam Milne for the first three matches of the season as a replacement for Usama Mir.
Melbourne Stars will be playing their first match of this season against Perth Scorchers on December 15 at Optus Stadium.
