Veteran Amit Mishra has said that the franchise Lucknow Super Giants will sack KL Rahul for the next season and will look for a better captain.
LSG likely to Sack KL Rahul from Captaincy
Amit Mishra who played for Lucknow Super Giants said that the franchise will look for a new captain for the IPL 2025 who opts to play t20 cricket. Mishra’s comments come after he played down the heated on-field chat between KL Rahul and LSG owner Sanjiv Goenka in IPL 2024.
Amit Mishra said that the IPL captain doesn’t have to be part of the Indian T20I team, but should be able to match the pulse of the T20 format and be a team player.
LSG has qualified for the playoffs for the first two seasons 2022 and 2023. During the 2024 season, they completed in seventh place with 14 points winning seven matches.
“It does not matter if he is in the Indian team or not. But a person who has the right mentality for T20s should be the captain. Someone who plays for the team should be the captain. I am sure LSG will look for a better captain,” said Amit Mishra.
Mishra was disappointed when they suffered defeat at the hands of Sunrisers Hyderabad by 10 wicket difference. Following the game, LSG co-owner Sanjiv Goenka can be seen having an animated chat with KL Rahul. Later Goenka hosted Rahul at his residence for dinner to rubbish rumours and speculations that the on-field chat gave way to.
“Goenka was disappointed. We lost two back-to-back matches very badly. Against KKR, we lost by some 90-100 runs, and against SRH, the match was finished within 10 overs. It felt like we were bowling them during a net practice session. If I am so angry about it, will someone who has actually put money into the team not feel angry?” said Mishra.
“It was not a huge deal. But I later came to know that he said that the bowling was very bad and the team should have shown some fight. It looked like you had completely surrendered. But I feel people and media hyped it up a bit,” he added.
KL Rahul is keen on returning to action in the upcoming Sri Lanka tour. With India’s squad yet to be announced, Hardik Pandya will be likely leading the squad. It remains uncertain whether Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli will feature in the three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka in August.
