LPL 2024 introduces Power Blast in death overs

Lanka Premier League is set to include a new rule named ‘Power Blast’ in its upcoming edition – LPL 2024. The LPL 2024 is set to be played between July 1 and 21 in Sri Lanka.

LPL 2024 introduces Power Blast in Death overs

As per the LPL 2024 schedule, the first match will be played between B-Love Kandy and Dambulla Sixers in Pallekele International Cricket Stadium, Pallekele. A total of 24 matches will be played between five different teams across three venues in Sri Lanka.

The Power Blast rule allows two additional powerplay overs at the death overs. Apart from the stand powerplay that takes place in the first six overs of an inning, the Power Blast overs will provide an additional two power-play overs at the death overs.

The 16th and 17th overs of the inning will be the ‘Power Blast’ overs and will have a maximum of four fielders outside the 30-yard circle.

This allows LPL to become the first domestic T20 league to allow more than one power play in an inning. The introduction of powerplay in the death overs will allow the players to strike more boundaries compared to the previous.

Usually, in a format like Twenty20, batters will strike aggressively in the death overs to push the team’s score to a greater extent. LPL’s ‘Power Blast’ overs will provide an extra boost for the batters to push the team’s score to a newer height.

With the introduction of ‘Power Blast’ at the death overs we can expect some record-breaking knocks in the LPL 2024. On the other hand, the bowling team will save their best bowlers to bowl the 16th and 17th overs to restrict the run flow.

The new feature is designed to create “a more aggressive and thrilling phase of the game”, according to an LPL statement.

“We decided to bring this innovation in order to create further excitement for the league, which is growing year by year. This new introduction is sure to generate a lot of excitement among the fans, and the teams will need to strategise effectively to make the most of this period”, Samantha Dodanwela, the LPL’s tournament director, said in the statement.
