Koncharoenkai, bowlers clinched Thailand maiden victory in Women’s Asia Cup 2024

With an impressive bowling attack from Thailand Women, Thipatcha Putthawong and Co. registered their first victory of the Women’s Asia Cup 2024 by beating Malaysia Women by 22 runs.

Onnicha Kamchomphu played a vital role in Thailand’s victory by dismissing Winifred Duraisingam at a very crucial stage of the game. Duraisingam’s dismissal was the starting point of the downfall of Malaysia in their 133-run chase game.

While batting, Nannapat Koncharoenkai single-handedly dragged the team towards scoring a decent score with her 35 balls 40. Phannita Maya’s 29 is the second-best individual score of the team in Dambulla.

Speaking of the game, Thailand Women won the toss and opted to bat first. Boochatham and Nannaphat Chaihan opened the inning on behalf of Thailand Women. Suabika Manivannan made the first breakthrough by dismissing Nannaphat Chaihan for duck.

Following the dismissal, Thailand Women lost a couple of wickets in no time and lost three wickets before reaching the fifty runs mark. Wicketkeeper batter N Koncharoenkai and Phannita Maya started to build a partnership and added 48 runs for the next wicket.

Mahirah Izzati Ismail broke the partnership by dismissing Koncharoenkai for 40 runs. In the same over, the new batter Sutthiruang also lost her wicket without scoring a run. With Suwanan Khiaoto’s 14 and Rosenan Kanoh’s 13, Thailand Women scored 133 runs for six-wicket loss at the end of 20 overs.

While chasing, Malaysia Women made an impressive start by adding 68 runs for the first wicket. Nepal Women’s took more than ten overs to draw the first blood but made an impressive bounce back by dismantling the Malaysia Women’s batting lineup.

Onnicha Kamchomphu broke the threatening opening partnership by dismissing Winifred Duraisingam for 22 runs in the first ball of the 12th over. Soon after her dismissal, the following batters failed to withstand the bowling attack and started to lose wickets at regular intervals.

Malaysia Women lost their hope of winning the game right after Wan Julia lost her wicket for 52 via an unexpected runout dismissal. Thailand Women bowlers with their tight bowling attack, restricted Malaysia Women to score just 111 runs at the end of 20 overs after losing eight wickets.

With the 22-run victory, Thailand moves to the top spot of the Women’s Asia Cup 2024 points table.
