The ACB has extended a 12-month contract after a successful campaign in 2024 when Afghanistan made their maiden appearance in the Semi-finals of the T20 World Cup.
His next assignment will be the ODI leg of Afghanistan’s tour of Zimbabwe in 2024. He will be unavailable for T20I and test legs due to personal reasons.
In his absence, Hamid Hassan will oversee the team, while Nawroz Mangal will serve as the assistant coach during the series.
“Jonathan Trott will accompany the squad only in ODIs, whereas he will remain unavailable for the T20Is and Test matches due to his personal commitments. Hamid Hassan will step up and take on the role of Head Coach in Trott’s absence,” the ACB statement said.

They also beat South Africa and Bangladesh in Sharjah to secure series victories in the ODI format.
Afghanistan has made their first ever World Cup semi-finals apperance after victory against New Zealand and Australia in the Group and Super-8 stages of the T20 World Cup 2024.
Trott’s tenure as Afghanistan head coach begun in July 2022 witha 18-month stint that was renewed by a year in January 2024. Afghanistan has 14 out of 34 ODIs, 20 of the 44 T20Is they have played since appointment.
The ongoing stint is Jonathan Trott’s first as head coach. He was a consultant with Scotland during T20 World Cup 2021. He has 3835 runs in 52 tests, at an average of 44.08 as a player and was a key figure in England’s away Ashes in 2010-11.
He has made 2819 runs at an average of 51.25 in ODI format with four hundreds and 22 fifties.
His head coach job has spilled his maiden head coach job in Franchise cricket, SA20 with the Pretoria Capitals. Trott’s stint with Afghanistan will bring rich experience in SA20 2025.
With the T20I series begins on December 11, the ODI series will be played starting from December 17 at Harare Sports Club.
