The star batter Joe Root has surpassed Indian legend Sachin Tendulkar to become the highest run scorer in the fourth innings of the first test of England’s tour of New Zealand.
England secured a stunning 8-wicket victory in the first test at Hagley Oval. Joe Root scored 23* runs in 15 deliveries in England’s win over New Zealand and surpassed Sachin Tendulkar‘s tally of 1625 runs in the fourth innings as England chased 104 run target in only 12.2 overs, the fastest 100 plus run chase in test history.
Playing his 150th test, Root jumped abover Alastair Cook, Craeme Smith before surpassing Sachin Tendulkar less than 11 fewer innings, taking his overall fourth innings tally to 1630 in 49 innings with a 40-plus average two centuries and eight fifties.
However, only 620 runs have resulted in England wins, with 715 being the corresponding figure for Tendulkar. Only former South captain Smith has recorded over 1000th fourth innings runs in victories.
Only 3144 runs seperate Root (12,777) from Tendulkar (15,921) on the test run scoring charts with the Yorkshire having played only 55 innings less than Tendulkar.

Brydon Carse has delivered a career best 6/42 completing a rare overseas ten wicket haul with his match figures of 10 for 106. Carse’s precision dismantled New Zealand lower order on the fourth day, meanwhile Jacob Bethell making his debut, capped the chase with an unbeaten 50 runs off 37 deliveries including eight boundaries and a six.
New Zealand bega the day 155 for 6 with a slender lead of four runs and struggled England’s bowling attack.
Currently, New Zealand secured 4th position while England secured 6th position in the WTC points table.
