Jason Gillespie has stepped down as Pakistan’s Test team coach, with former Aaqib Javed as interim coach for the South Africa test series.
The men in Green are currently involved in a white ball leg of the Pakistan tour of South Africa. Gillespie whose contract was set to expire in 2026, resigned after Pakistan Cricket Tim Nielsen was sacked from the assistant role on December 12.
Gillespie was removed from the selection panel and was given the role of match strategist. To be noted, Gary Kirsten joined the white-ball side along Gillespie resigned before the Australia tour.
“The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has named Aqib Javed as interim red-ball head coach of the Pakistan men’s cricket team following the resignation of red-ball head coach Jason Gillespie,” said a statement from PCB.
Kirsten has resigned citing difference with the PCB on the matters of authority. Both Gillespie and Kirstern were appointed on a two year contract before the T20 World Cup 2024 and the PCB has promised a new era for the Pakistan team.
Under Gillespie’s guidance, the team secured a win in a three match test series against England at home in October. Pakistan are currently placed in the ICC WTC points table having four more tests remaining in the ongoing cycle.
Pakistan are currently contesting a three match T20I series followed by a three match ODI series and will begin thereafter at the Centurion on Boxing day.
The first test of the South Africa-Pakistan tests will begin on December 26 at SuperSport Park Cricket Stadium.
