IPL 2022: Shreyas Iyer Named as Kolkata Knight Riders Captain

IPL 2022 Kolkata Knight Riders Captain: Kolkata Knight Riders names Shreyas Iyer as their new captain for the upcoming Indian Premier League 2022. Notably, KKR brought Shreyas Iyer for a whopping INR 12.25 crores at the recently concluded 2-day mega auction.

A total of 11 players fetched 10 crores or more in the 2-day mega event. Ishan Kishan became the most expensive player of the IPL 2022 auction and the second-most expensive of all time as he was bought by Mumbai Indians for 15.25 crore.

Shreyas Iyer Named as Kolkata Knight Riders Captain

KKR who released their skipper Eoin Morgan ahead of IPL 2022 Mega Auction, seeks to rope a captain cum aggressive player – which Shreyas Iyer has got.

Earlier, Iyer captained Delhi Capitals and led them to their maiden IPL final against the Mumbai Indians. Iyer scored an unbeaten 65 off 50 balls in a losing effort as Mumbai Indians won the final.

KKR on their official Twitter account made the official announcement. KKR tweeted “Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, say hello to the NEW SKIPPER of the #GalaxyOfKnights”.

Right after the announcement KKR CEO Venky Mysore said, “We are delighted firstly to have been able to successfully bid for Shreyas in the IPL auction & to have the opportunity for him to lead KKR”.

“He has impressed one & all as a quality batsman at the highest level & we are confident that he will excel as a leader of KKR.”

“I am extremely honoured to have gotten the opportunity to lead a prestigious team like KKR,” Iyer said.

“The IPL as a tournament brings the best players from different countries and cultures together and I look forward to leading this great group of very talented individuals.

“I would like to thank the owners, management and support staff of KKR for giving me the opportunity to lead this team and I am confident that we will find the right synergies to achieve the team’s goals. Kolkata and The Eden Gardens have a very rich history when it comes to Indian cricket and I look forward to contributing to this rich history and making our fans proud of us as a team,” he added.

KKR head Coach Brendon McCullum’s view

“I am very excited to have one of India’s brightest future leaders in Shreyas Iyer, take the reins at KKR. I’ve enjoyed Shreyas’ game and his captaincy skills from afar and now will look forward to working closely with him to drive forward the success and style of play we want at KKR,” head coach Brendon McCullum said.

Iyer led Delhi to their maiden IPL final in 2020. In 87 IPL appearances for the team since his debut in 2015, Iyer has scored 2375 runs at a strike rate of 123.95.
