Ishan Kishan returns to domestic cricket; set to play in Buchi Babu tournament

Wicketkeeper batter Ishan Kishan who got axed from the BCCI central contract 2023-24 is set to make his comeback in Indian domestic cricket. Ishan Kishan is set to represent Jharkhand in the Buchi Babu tournament, which will begin on August 15 in Chennai.

In an earlier report, BCCI and men’s senior selection committee have made it clear that all available players need to play for their respective states. Kishan who looking to find a way back into the Indian side, wants to make the most of the upcoming season.

Right after Ishan Kishan opted out of India’s tour of South Africa 2023-24 test series due to personal reasons he was expected to feature in the following Ranji Trophy series.

But the left-hander opted to skip the entire series which led to BCCI removing him from the central contract list.

Indian head coach at that time – Rahul Dravid has suggested Ishan Kishan to play and perform in the domestic matches to make a comeback in the Indian squad which the 25-year-old neglected.

Following his decision to skip the domestic matches, Ishan Kishan received severe criticism from the netizens. Though Kishan’s decision to feature in the Buchi Babu tournament was not officially confirmed, an insider has confirmed his availability and participation.

“Yes, Ishan Kishan is going to play for Jharkhand in the Buchi Babu tournament. It is a prestigious tournament where all top red-ball teams come and play. The conditions are challenging and it’s the right way to prepare yourself for the long domestic grind ahead,” says a source aware of the development.

Ishan Kishan played his last match for India back in November 2023 during the third T20I of a five-match series against Australia. After skipping the South Africa tour and Ranji Trophy, Kishan returned to action for the Indian Premier League 2024.

While the left-hander was expected to make an impressive performance in IPL 2024 following his break, he just returned with a score of just 320 from 14 innings at an average of 22.85 and a strike rate of 148.83.

His performance in the IPL 2024 makes him less considered for the T20 World Cup 2024 as the management picked Rishabh Pant and Sanju Samson as the two wicketkeepers for the World Cup tour.
