Ireland Women put 238 runs on board in first ODI against India at Rajkot

With Gaby Lewis’s impressive 92, Ireland Women scored 238 runs after losing seven wickets in the allotted 50 overs in the first ODI against India at Rajkot

The Ireland Women cricket team is scheduled to tour India in January 2025 to play a three-match ODI series. Notably, Ireland Women’s tour of India 2025 will mark their first tour to India and also will be the first-ever bilateral series between the two sides.

In the first ODI at Rajkot, Gaby Lewis registered her first fifty against India and was expected to register a TON but eventually failed with eight runs short.

Speaking of the match, Ireland Women won the toss and opted to bat first where Sarah Forbes and Gaby Lewis opened the batting attack. Though the duo made a steady start, Titas Sadhu in the fifth over dismissed Forbes for 9 and made the first breakthrough.

Following the opening batter’s dismissal, Una Raymond-Hoey returned to the pavilion after losing her wicket in an unexpected run-out dismissal, scoring just five runs.

While Orla Prendergast was expected to make a stand with the captain, Priya Mishra with her incredible bowling variation skill dismissed her via stumping in the second ball of the 14th over.

In the very next delivery, Priya Mishra dismissed Laura Delany for a golden duck and loaded pressure over the Ireland batters. While Ireland was down to 56 for four, Lewis and Leah Paul made a 117-run stand and saved Ireland from ending up setting a low target.

While the duo looked threatening, Leah Paul lost her wicket via run-out dismissal for 59 while Gaby Lewis lost her wicket to Deepti Sharma after scoring 92 runs.

With Arlene Kelly’s 28, Ireland managed to score 238 runs for seven wickets loss at the end of 50 overs.

During the post-match conversation, Ireland’s Leah Paul said “It was great to get out there as a team and we put a total that we believe we can defend if we bowl well, so good first innings for us.

We (Lewis and I) are used to batting together and she is very calm out in the middle and nice to spend some time in the partnership. We just tried to keep it simple and focussed on batting for a longer time. I just tried to stick to my game plan and it worked today. It’s a nice batting surface and it is a good total and I believe we can defend it”.
