IPL 2025 Mega Auction Retention Rules Announced by BCCI

With the high expectations from the franchises and cricket fans regarding the retention policy, the IPL 2025 mega auction Retention rules are likely to be announced by today.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India conducted a meeting with IPL owners on July 31, discussing the retention policies, the use of RTM cards and other topics as well as where the franchise gave their recommendations.

Like previous mega auctions, the franchise has to release their retained and released players list as per the rules.

With the mega auction expected to be held in the 3rd or 4th week of November 2024 in UAE or London, BCCI has not revealed an official announcement regarding the IPL 2025 mega auction Date and Venue.

IPL 2025 Mega Auction Retention Rules

The IPL 2025 Retention Rules vary based on the number of RTMs available in the auction. Each team can hold up to five players ahead of the auction.

It comes in combination with the ‘right-to-match’ (RTM) policy. As per IPL Mega Auction 2025 rules, a team can retain up to three Indian-capped players, up to two overseas and one uncapped Indian player.

RTM is an option that teams can use on players that match a bid during the auction to ensure the player is retained. BCCI also explained the salary cap for the retained players based on the team’s decision on the number of players retained.

    • If a team retains 4 players, Rs 42 crore will be cut from the player purse.
    • If a team retains 3 players, Rs 33 crore will be cut from the player purse.
    • If a team retains 2 players, Rs 24 crore will be cut from the player purse.
    • If a team retains only one player, it will lose Rs 14 crore from its purse value.
    • Each uncapped player retained will cost Rs 4 crore each.

The IPL 2025 mega auction will be huge in the history of IPL. The 18th season of the league will see an opportunity for the franchises to create their teams and only limited options will be provided to retain the players.

The player auction will allow teams to shuffle their squads and add star players from both domestic and overseas players. The beginning of the IPL 2008 introduced the player auctions which changed the dynamics of the cricket. This event will be crucial in shaping the teams for the upcoming season adding to the growing anticipation.

To be noted, in the IPL 2022 auction, teams were allowed to retain four players, with two possible combinations, three Indian players and one foreign player, or two Indian players and two foreign players.
