Imam-ul-Haq’s Controversial Dismissal in 1st Test Against SL

The first test match of the Pakistan tour of Sri Lanka 2022 has been scheduled to play in Galle International Stadium, Galle between July 16 – 20.

Winning the toss Sri Lanka decides to bat first and scored 222 runs for 10 wickets while Pakistan skipper Babar Azam who recently backed Virat Kohli registered his 7th Test hundred and led Pakistan to score 218 runs in their first inning.

During Sri Lanka’s second inning, the hosts made an impressive strike and led Sri Lanka to score 337 runs. While Pakistan started their final innings with a need of 342 runs to lead the series.

Pakistan’s destructive opening duo Abdullah Shafique and Imam-ul-Haq opened the inning and start to add runs in their style until Dickwella made this controversial dismissal.

The controversial dismissal of Imam-ul-Haq happened on the 5th delivery of the 29th over. The dismissal was not a planned act but an attempt from Sri Lankan wicketkeeper to dismiss the dangerous batsman – Imam.

Ramesh Mendis bowled the ball which turned and bounced. Imam while playing inside the line missed the ball and Dickwella made a usual stumping attempt and asked for a stumping dismissal from the umpire.

After multiple checkings from the third umpire, Imam was given OUT and made to return to the Pavillion for 35 runs. Though it seems to be a regular dismissal the controversy erupts when Dickwella waited for Imam to lift his leg to hit the stumps – one of the things MS Dhoni did during his career.

Imam’s shadow made it too difficult for the third umpire(Rod Tucker) to make a decision. While reviewing, the front angle suggests that there could have been a spike in contact with the ground.

For further reviews, the third umpire(Rod Tucker) asked for different angles and asks for the square leg angle and magnifier. While reviewing the square leg angle, it does suggest the foot is off the ground.

After slowing it down frame by frame third umpire concludes that Imam lifted his foot when the bail was off.

Following the dismissal, Twitter starts to flood with lots of questions but the majority of the cricket fans answered YES to Cricket Pakistan’s question – Was this out? while some suggest No.

While considering the match, Pakistan lost another wicket in the form of Azhar Ali while Pakistan scored 104 runs. Pakistan captain Babar Azam joining with Abdullah Shafique led Pakistan to score 134 runs for 2 wickets loss where Pakistan needs 208 runs to win the match.
