Healy Ruled Out for First Ashes T20I Due to Injury; Doubtful for Remainder of Series

The Australian captain Alyssa Healy has been ruled out for the opening T20I match of the Women’s Ashes 2025 after being assessed for soreness in the foot.

Healy reported in the same foot she injured during the T20 World Cup in October when her side ended during the group stage after she ruptured her plantar fascia.

It will mean that Australia will likely to be captained by Tahlia McGrath aiming for a clean sweep in the T20I series and retain the Ashes in Sydney.

Healy’s place in the line up could be helped by either Grace Harris or uncapped Georgia Voll.

“Alyssa has developed mid-foot soreness on the same side as her previous plantar fascia injury following the ODI series. She is currently being managed in a boot and will not be available for this evening’s game,” a Cricket Australia statement said.

“Cricket Australia’s medical team is consulting with specialists to develop an appropriate management plan over the coming days. Her availability for the remainder of the series will be assessed as more information becomes available.”

Australia secured a cleansweep 3-0 against England in ODIs and a win in the first T20I will help them retain the Ashes.

Healy has returned from the injury sustained at the World Cup, but her WBBL season was cut short by a knee problem.

She also missed the last month’s ODI series against India due to knee complaint, then returned as a specialist batter for the one-day tour of New Zealand that followed, before the wicketkeeping gloves from Beth Mooney for the first Ashes ODI at North Sydney Oval.

The second and third T20I matches will be played on January 23 and 25 respectively on Manuka Oval and Adelaide Oval.
