Harry Brook to Lead England in ODI Against Australia

The England batter Harry Brook is set to lead England in the ODI series against Australia as Jos Buttler has been ruled out of the tournament. Jos Buttler has been out of action since England’s defeat in the T20 World Cup 2024 semi-finals against India.

Due to his recovery from the calf injury, the England captain missed the Hundred 2024 and was ruled out of the T20I series against Australia. He is still recovering from the calf injury and ruled out for the ODI series against Australia.

Buttler’s absence has created an opportunity for Liam Livingstone to make his return to the ODI squad after being previously overlooked.

His calf injury awarded the great opportunity to Phil Salt to lead England in the T20I series, which ended in a tie 1-1 against Australia.

Jos Buttler has been out for the rest of the summer with a calf injury sustained in July, the big opportunity has been handed to Harry Brook as the England and Wales Cricket Board elevated the talented batter to captain for the upcoming five-match ODI series against Australia at home.

The 25-year-old batter is set to lead the side for the first time in ODI Cricket, but the ECB is keen on investing in him.

Brook’s leadership has been evident for years, having captained England’s U-19 team during the 2018 World Cup. He had been regularly gaining leadership experience, including stepping in as Yorkshire’s captain for four matches in the T20 Blast 2022.

Under his captaincy, the Northern Superchargers won five of the six completed matches, missing out on the knockout stages of The Hundred 2024.

Additionally, Brook has been a key part of England’s leadership group in test cricket, serving as vice-captain to Ollie Pope in the side’s recent test win against Sri Lanka.

Brook has played 15 ODI cricket only, but the side sees him as a future leader. Ollie Pope took the over captaincy in tests from Ben Stokes after the skipper sustained a hamstring injury that saw him miss the three-match series against Sri Lanka while Phil Salt took over the captaincy in the T20I format.

Leveling the series 1-1 in the T20I format, England and Australia will be playing their first ODI match on September 19 at Trent Bridge.
