Harmanpreet Kaur suspended for two matches for her actions in IND vs BAN 3rd ODI

The Indian Women’s team is set to play in the Asian Games where Indian Skipper Harmanpreet Kaur was suspended for two matches due to her actions against Umpire’s decision on the 3rd ODI match against Bangladesh.

India Women’s captain Harmanpreet Kaur was suspended by ICC for the next two games following an ICC Code of Conduct breach during the final ODI against Bangladesh recently.

The incident happened on the 34th over of the Indian innings after she smashed the stumps with the bat after being adjudged out by the on-field umpire.

She further had a heated discussion with umpire Tanvir Ahmed and thereafter expressed her disappointment with the umpiring standards during the post-match presentation. Kaur was handed three demerit points for her behaviour.

From scattering the stumps to calling the umpires for end-of-series photographs with the team her actions become the hot topic of discussion in the spectrum.

It was not the first time she lost her coolness, she had done it before on various occasions with her fellow batter, against the Umpires, and even threw her bat in the field.

The former India captain Diana Edulji slammed Harmanpreet‘s actions, suggesting it was probably because of her poor form with the bat that Harmanpreet lost her coolness in the match.

She was initially fined 50% of the match fee and received three demerit points for a level 2 offence for showing dissatisfaction with the umpire’s decision.

The second breach was during the presentation ceremony after the game in which Harmanpreet criticised the umpiring in the game. She was fined 25% of her match fee and received one demerit point for this offence.

As a result, she ended up accommodating four demerit points that convert into two suspension points which result in a player getting banned for one Test or two ODIs or two T20Is, whatever comes first for the player.

Harmanpreet Kaur admitted the offences and accepted the sanctions proposed by Akhtar Ahmed of the ICC International Panel of Match Referees and was no need for a formal hearing.

The On-field umpires Tanvir Ahmed and Muhammad Kamruzzaman, third umpire Moniruzzamman and fourth umpire Ali Arman leveled the charges.

Level 2 breaches carry a penalty of between 50 and 100 per cent of a player’s match fee and three or four demerit points while Level 1 breaches carry a minimum penalty of 50 per cent of a player’s match fee with one or two demerit points.

Kaur’s four demerit points convert to two suspension points. The two suspension points are equal to a ban from one Test or two ODIs or two T20Is. But whatever comes first for the player or player support, Harmanpreet Kaur is suspended from India’s forthcoming matches.
