“If We Play Well Against..” Glenn Maxwell on Australia’s Battles Against Ashwin, Jadeja

All-rounder Glenn Maxwell believes that Australia’s triumph in the Border Gavaskar Trophy is ensured by how their batters deal with India’s ace spin duo Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja.

India is eyeing their third successive win in the tournament after securing a victories in the 2018-19 and 2020-21 seasons. To be specific, India is the only Asian team to beat Australia in a test series at their home.

While speaking ahead of the upcoming Border Gavaskar trophy Maxwell said, “I think that over a long period of time, having played against guys like Ashwin and Jadeja, those two seem to have always been the ones we’ve faced consistently, and the battles we’ve had with them have often dictated the outcome of the game.”

Maxwell who played his last test match in 2017, said Australia will have to nullify the senior Indian spinners. Ashwin and Jadeja have combinedly picked 821 wickets in 330 innings with 50 five-wicket hauls.

“If we play well against those two (Ashwin, Jadeja), we’ll generally find ourselves in a better position compared to when they’ve had a field day and run through us,” said Glenn Maxwell.

“Those two guys have been there for most of my career, being of a similar age,” he added.

Maxwell also praised Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah for his development as an all-format bowler.

“…And probably, more recently, Jasprit Bumrah. I was there in his first year of the IPL in 2013 at Mumbai and pretty much faced him every day in the nets.”

“To see him evolve from a young, untapped talent to what he is now—the probably best bowler across all three formats—is a pretty amazing story,” Glenn Maxwell noted.

India and Australia have secured top and second position in the WTC points table and their five-match series could bring a certain movement in the points table.

The five-match test series will kickstart on November 22 while the second test will be played on a day-night format under the stadium lights starting on December 06.

The third test will be played in the Gabba which will be held between December 14-18. The fourth test will be played between December 26-30 at Melbourne Cricket Ground.

The fifth and final test at the Sydney Cricket Ground from January 3-7 will give a promising dramatic conclusion for the exciting contest.
