Gerald Coetzee Ruled Out for Sri Lanka Test, Pakistan Series due to Injury

The pacer Gerald Coetzee has been ruled out for the second test of the Sri Lanka tour of South Africa and also will be ruled out for the upcoming all-format tour against Pakistan due to a groin injury he sustained in the first test.

Meanwhile, uncapped Kwena Maphaka has been added to the squad for the last test. Coetzee was part of the squad which secured 223 runs on Saturday. He bowled in the morning session along with Kagison Rabada but stopped after a three-over spell.

His second spell of the morning was off just two overs as de Silva and Dinesh Chandimal started fighting back.

He had discomfort on the fourth day of the first test against Sri Lanka. He underwent scans which revealed a right groin muscle strain which was announced by Cricket South Africa media release.

With Wiaan Mulder being ruled out due to fractured right middle finger, South Africa has suffered a blow back, but also confident on finding the replacement.

“Wiaan is out of the series, we have to find a replacement. Gerald Coetzee, the medical team will have do to their best,” said Temba Bavuma.

Two out of three South Africa’s pacers, Kagison Rabada and Marco Jansen are fit for the second test, and Dane Paterson has been added to the squad.

South Africa will be missing the services of Nandre Burger who sustained a lower back stress fracture and Lungi Ngidi out till January.

Matthew Breetzke, the top-order batter, was named Mulder’s replacement earlier. “We will more than likely add another player to our group,” said Shukla Conrad said.

Currently, South Africa secured second position in the WTC points table while Sri Lanka slipped to fifth position. The second test of the Sri Lanka tests will begin on December 05 at St George’s Oval.
