The Indian legend Cricketer Sunil Gavaskar trolls England captain Ben Stokes after his umpire’s call on Ben Duckett’s wicket on day 01 of the Ranchi Test and explains the importance of the Umpire’s call rule.
Gavaskar trolls Ben Stokes
On day 01, England opener Ben Duckett was dismissed for 11 runs in the first innings. During the 9th over, Ben Duckett was given not out for the LBW after Jadeja‘s appeal.
The replays showed that the ball was hitting Duckett outside the line off-stump, but the ball-tracking system shows that the least part was hitting him in the line.
The decision went in favour of England with on-field umpire Dharmasena’s decision stayed.
While speaking in the commentary, Gavaskar said, “Have a look at this. This is the umpire’s call. All those who are saying the umpire’s call should be done away with, on replay (on this instance), the ball was hitting the stumps, which meant, Duckett ‘goodbye’.”
In case, the umpire’s call is done away with and the ball is hitting the stumps, it will be given out. This is Test cricket, most matches will finish in 2-and-half-days,” said Gavaskar.
Recently, Ben Stokes spoke against the Umpire’s call rule due to the LBW of Zak Crawley in the second innings of the third test in Rajkot.
Jasprit Bumrah dismissed the opener on day 04, where the umpire’s call went in favor of the bowling side. Ben Stokes was baffled as the replays suggested the ball missing the stumps.
Ben Stokes was depressed with the 434-run defeat and called for consistency in DRS. “Yeah, just about Zak’s DRS. He was just giving us some information about how it was judged to be given out when the balls did not hit the stumps on the DRS.”
“The ball did not hit the stumps on replay. It was apparently that numbers said that it hit the stump, but the image was wrong. So I don’t understand what’s going on there,” Stokes had said.
The Men in Blues are currently playing their fourth test on England’s tour of India 2024. Leading the series 2-1 Indian side has made significant changes in the squad by resting Jasprit Bumrah for the fourth test.
Akash Deep who made his test debut bagged three wickets of England’s top order and made them struggle with 112 runs losing five wickets before the lunch break.
After the lunch break England regained the balance in the match and continued to score runs on day 01. Joe Root smashed a half-century and looks forward to hit a century in the first innings at JSCA International Stadium Complex.
