Sunil Gavaskar Slams KL Rahul for His ‘Special’ Century Celebration vs MI

Former Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar slams KL Rahul over his celebration after scoring a century in MI vs LSG IPL 2022 league match on April 16.

As soon as the LSG skipper breached the three-figure mark in the final over of the innings, he carried out his trademark celebration, closing his eyes and shutting down his ear canals with two fingers.

This special celebration of his only comes out when he reaches the three-figure figure and the fans have, in a way, become used to his quiet celebration.

However, there is one person who has a problem with Rahul’s celebration and that man is none other than legendary cricketer Sunil Gavaskar.

The ‘Little Master’ is of the opinion that closing his ears after scoring a hundred doesn’t make any sense because it’s the time to take in as much applause as he can.

“He is shutting down the noise when he has got a hundred you want to take the applause. He should do this when he has scored four, five, six runs but when you got a hundred take it out, enjoy the applause. Everybody is applauding you,” Gavaskar said during the mid-innings break.

According to the legendary batter, celebrations like these are meant for time when you are going through a lean patch not when you are scoring a heap of runs.

“I do not understand, let all the applause come through, not shut it out. You shut it out when you get out on zero, one, two, three, four or something like that. That when you put your fingers in ears,” the former India captain explained.

KL Rahul Explains the Reason for His Century Celebration

In the past, Rahul has made it clear that his celebration is not meant to “disrespect anyone” but to “shut out the noise” of people who often try to pull a player down when he is going through a difficult phase.

“It (the celebration) is just to shut out the noise, not to disrespect anyone. There are people out there who try to pull you down, at times you need to neglect them. So that’s just a message to shut out that noise,” KL Rahul had said last year after scoring a century against England.

KL Rahul led Lucknow Super Giants will lock their horns against Royal Challengers Bangalore on April 19 to play the 31st league match of IPL 2022 in Dr. DY Patil Sports Academy, Mumbai.
