The former cricket Gautam Gambhir was delighted on Virat Kohli’s gesture on the match against Afghanistan in the world Cup match on Wednesday.

India was scheduled to play in the 9th match of the ICC World Cup 2023 against Afghanistan where the former won the match with 8 wickets. Winning the toss, Afghanistan chose to bat where they scored 272 runs on 50 overs. India openers were impressive as they had a partnership score of 156 runs helping the side for quick victory.

It was an incident where the former player Gautam Gambhir was delighted on Virat Kohli’s gesture asking crowd not to troll the Afghanistan pacer Naveen-ul-Haq.

The cricketing community was treated to a heartwarming moment when the players Naveen-ul-Haq and Virat Kohli shared a friendly handshake and patted each other on the back.

It showed the unity and friendship beyond the competitive spirit on the cricket field.

“That was a great gesture. The good thing was we saw Virat and Naveen in between the overs, we can see that the fight has ended. I hope at every venue that Afghanistan plays in at the World Cup, the crowd sees this gesture from Virat,” Gambhir told.

“If you can’t support anyone, don’t criticise him. You have the right to support your favourite player but you don’t have any to criticise a player,” the former India batter added.

“Everyone has the right to fight for their honour and their team. But these fights should stay in the middle, not spill over outside. It doesn’t matter which country you belong to or how good a player you are. So I wish that the crowd behaves in a more sensible manner in the future.

When foreign players come to play in India, we should be better brand ambassadors for our country. These players should return with better memories. Whatever country they are from, Pakistan or Afghanistan. It’s not appropriate to troll them viciously for something that happened in the middle. Let’s be better ambassadors.

“The way the crowd behaved after that fight… the fans could have behave more sensibly. No one else besides players from the two teams knows what happened between the two sets of players,” he added.

“The most important thing is the way the crowd reacted, it should have behaved in a more sensible way because no one knew from this crowd what happened between those two on that day. The two players, their team managementts only knew.

I hope the crowds in the coming days behave better, offer better support. People are coming to play in our country, as hosts, we can become better brand ambassadors. The players coming here should take only good memories,” he added.

Naveen-ul-Haq and Virat Kohli had a dispute during an IPL match and they had a handshake after the match. But it did not end with that match. The Afghan all-rounder escaleted matters humoursly posting image of mangoes whenever Kohli faced setbacks or RCB experienced loss in the tournament.

After the match, India is scheduled to play against their arch rivals Pakistan on October 14 at Narendra Modi Stadium.
