Ganguly Slams Selection Committee Over India Squad For West Indies
Ganguly has questioned the national selectors’ decision to name Rahane as Vice-Captain for the upcoming test series of the West Indies tour but concerns over Rohit Sharma as his fitness remains to be due till the morning of the match.
Shiva Sundar Das led four-member committee might have a vision to have an experienced hand as a deputy in case the regular captain turns up unfit on the morning of the match.
Sourav Suggests Jadeja for Vice Captain
About the fitness of Rohit Sharma, he is also not sure as he can be unfit before the start of the match. Sourav thinks he failed to understand the logic behind the decision.
He said, “I won’t say it’s a step backwards. You have been out for 18 months, then you play a Test and you become a vice-captain. I don’t understand the thought process behind it. There is Ravindra Jadeja, who has been there for a long time and a certainty in Test matches, he is a candidate”.
“But to just come back and straightway becomes vice-captain after 18 months, I don’t understand. My only thing is that the selection shouldn’t be hot and cold. There has to be continuity and consistency in selection,”
Just after one test match from his return, the national selection committee appointed Rahane as Vice Captain for West Indies Series.
The national committee also excluded Pujara from the squad for the West Indies tour. Ganguly wants the selectors to have a clear vision over Pujara, who played 103 test matches for India.
He said, “Selectors should have a clear idea about him [Pujara]. Do they need him to play Test cricket anymore or do they want to continue with youngsters, and communicate it to him. Somebody like Pujara can’t be dropped, then picked, dropped again and then picked. Same with Ajinkya Rahane also.”

Ganguly Backs Sarfaraz Khan
There have been lots of arguments overgrowing in the selections of the Test Serie squad. Ganguly backs Sarfaraz Khan, who was not selected for the WI test series. As Gavaskar questions BCCI about the non-selection of Sarfaraz Khan, Ganguly throws his view on the same.
“I think Yashasvi Jaiswal has scored tons of runs in Ranji Trophy, Irani Trophy, and Duleep Trophy. I think that’s why he is in the squad. I feel for Sarfaraz Khan. At some point, he should get an opportunity for the amount of runs that he has scored in past three years.
“And same thing for Abhimanyu Easwaran for the tons of runs he has scored in last five to six years. I am surprised that both of them have been omitted but they should get a chance in future. But Yashasvi Jasiwal is a good selection.” He has seen Sarfaraz from close quarters as Director of Cricket at Delhi Capitals and he isn’t amused with the perception that he can’t play fast bowling. If you don’t play him (Sarfaraz) against fast bowling, how do you know?”
He has observed him closely as being a director of cricket at Delhi Capitals. He talks about the idea that Sarfaraz Khan has weakness against Fast Bowling. “If you don’t play him against fast bowling, how do you know?” he asked.
“If he had problems he wouldn’t have scored so many runs all around [India]. I personally feel he has no problems against fast bowling and he should be given an opportunity.”
India will play their first Test game of the West Indies tour on June 12 in Windsor Park, Roseau, Dominica.
