Local media reported that Dhammika Niroshana was shot dead at his residence in Ambalangoda, a town in Galle district on Tuesday night (July 16). According to local police, Niroshana was with his wife and two children when an unidentified person opened fire at him. Police have started an investigation, trying to find the assailant and motive behind the crime.
The right-arm fast bowler who was more than a handy batter down the order, Niroshana was rated as a rising talent during his career. He played 12 FC games and 8 List A matches for the Galle Cricket Club between 2001 and 2004 amassing 317 runs and picking 19 wickets.
Nihal Thalduwa, Sri Lanka Police media spokesperson, the investigations have gotten underway to arrest the person involved in the murder of Niroshana and the Gunshot seems to be the result of Gang rivalry.
“Investigations are underway to arrest the suspect involved in the shooting which seemed to be a result of a gang rivalry,” said Thalduwa.
Known for his fast bowling options, Niroshana debuted for Sri Lanka’s U-19 in 2000 and captained the side in 2002. Despite not earning a call-up from the national side, he has played aside with Sri Lanka stars like Angelo Matthews, Upul Tharanga, and Farveez Maharoof at the U-19 level and in Sri Lanka’s domestic cricket. He has represented teams like Chilaw Marians Cricket Club and Galle Cricket Club during his career. However, he chose to retire from cricket at just 21 years old.
