Indian opening batsman Mayank Agarwal is set to join the Test squad for the upcoming England test match.
Mayank Agarwal Set to Join India Test Squad
Team India during their India tour of England 2022 is scheduled to play a rescheduled test match against host England on July 1 in Edgbaston, Birmingham. Ahead of the match, Indian skipper Rohit Sharma has tested positive for COVID19 and gets isolated in the team hotel.
“Mayank is flying today as a cover for Rohit and if need be will be available for the Test match as UK Covid protocols don’t require any quarantine period on landing if RT PCR test is negative,” a BCCI source told PTI.
Former India head coach Ravi Shastri suggests that Agarwal’s struggles in dealing with the pressures of IPL captaincy may have cost him a place for the one-off Test.
“I love the kid. I know how he plays his cricket, how determined he is. But it’s putting a guy who is very good at what he does in the wrong place,” Shastri had said.
“And it can have problems. Serious problems. Serious repercussions. It could have cost him his place in the Indian side. Test side, everything, because the selectors will judge on current form, they will judge on what they actually see.”
Mayank Agarwal last played a Test in March, during the home series against Sri Lanka, but could manage just 59 runs from two matches, at an average of 19.66.
