Dwayne Bravo set to retire from CPL after 2024 season

West Indies legendary allrounder Dwayne Bravo is set to retire from the Caribbean Premier League after the ongoing 2024 season.

Bravo made this shocking announcement just before the Trinbago Knight Riders (TKR) opening game of CPL 2024 against St Kitts and Nevis Patriots on August 31 in Basseterre.

He had led TKR to back-to-back titles in 2017 and 2018 before captaining Patriots to their first title in 2021. Bravo was also a part of the TKR title-winning side as a player in the 2020 edition of the tournament.

Bravo took to Instagram to share the news with his fans, reflecting on his journey and expressing his excitement for his final professional tournament in the Caribbean.

“It’s been a great journey. Today I would like to announce my retirement from @cplt20. This season will be my last one and I’m looking forward to a playing my final professional tournament in front of my Caribbean ppl! @tkriders – where it all started for me and will end with my team that I help built from scratch,” Bravo captioned the video post.

Dwayne Bravo’s CPL retirement comes almost three years after his T20I retirement which he announced after West Indies’ early exit at the 2021 T20 World Cup in the UAE. The allrounder announced his IPL retirement in 2023, having won four titles with Chennai Super Kings.

Since his IPL retirement, Bravo has served as Chennai Super Kings’ bowling coach. Dwayne Bravo currently holds the record for the most wickets in CPL, with 128 scalps in 103 matches.

Pete Russell, CEO of the CPL, paid tribute to Bravo. “We are so grateful that Dwayne has been a part of our tournament since its inception in 2013 and his contribution to making the league what it is today is immeasurable.

The CPL has become known around the world as the biggest party in sport and Dwayne’s enthusiasm and amazing personality has done as much as anyone to bring that to life. We are certain that ‘Sir Champion’ will continue to play a massive role in T20 cricket going forward and we wish him all the best in the next chapter,” he said in a statement.
