The left-arm spinner Dunith Wellalage becomes the youngest Sri Lankan player to take a five-wicket haul in Asia Cup ODI games.
Youngest player to bag five ODI wickets for Sri Lanka
India is scheduled to play against Sri Lanka in the Super Fours stage of the Asia Cup 2023 on September 12 at R. Premadasa Stadium. On winning the toss, India chose to bat where Sri Lankan bowlers Dunith Wellalage and Charith Asalanka shattered the defenses of Indian batters and dismissed them at regular intervals.
Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill opened for India and Kasun Rajitha opened the bowling attack for Sri Lanka. Dunith Wellalage dismissed Shubman Gill on the 12th over of the innings and sent Virat Kohli with three runs. With Rohit Sharma’s dismissal by Dunith Wellalage with 53 runs, India is down to 3 wickets for 91 runs.
Ishan Kishan and KL Rahul backed India with 33 and 39 runs respectively. But Wellalage and Asalanka were desperate to take wickets and dismissed other batters Hardik Pandya and Ravindra Jadeja with low figures. With their dismissal, India was down to 6 wickets for 172 runs.
Axar Patel tried to help India by increasing the score but the other batters could not withstand the bowling attack from Sri Lanka. Dunith Wellalage was terrific as he dismissed five wickets and he became the youngest Sri Lankan player to have a five-wicket haul in ODI games. Charith Asalanka was also impressive as he dismissed four wickets. On the final over, Theekshana dismissed Axar Pater and folded India for 213 runs.
Dunith Wellalage tops the list by dismissing five wickets on 20y 246d. Charitha Buddhika stands second on scalping 5 wickets at the age of 21y 65d against Zimbabwe in 2001. Thisara Perera is the third Sri Lankan player to dismiss 5 Indian batters at the age of 21y 141d in 2010.
And again Perera stands fourth with his match against Australia at the age of 21y 241d in 2010. Uvais stand in fifth position with the match against New Zealand at the age of 21y 233d in 1984.
