Delhi Capitals Player Mitch Marsh Tested Positive for COVID19

Australian cricketer Mitch Marsh who plays for Delhi Capitals in IPL 2022 has tested positive for COVID19 in a second RTPCR test along with two support staff and will be out of action for at least 10 days.

Marsh, who has played 32 tests for his country, was one of a “few” people in the team’s “bio bubble” to test positive but the rest were asymptomatic, Delhi Capitals said.

The other two who have tested positive are team doctor Abhijit Salvi and the team masseur. The RTPCR reports of all other players have returned negative. A few days back, team physio Patrick Farhart had tested positive for the virus.

“The Delhi Capitals medical team is closely monitoring Marsh’s condition,” the team said in a statement on Twitter. “All remaining members of the bubble are currently in isolation in their respective rooms, and will be tested regularly.”

“As of now, only three confirmed COVID cases have been detected. Once the final round of testing is done and if all return negative, there will be no issues in the squad travelling to Pune barring the three who are in isolation. With all teams having jumbo squads, we are pretty sure DC will be able to put 12 playing members on the field for their next game,” a BCCI source told.

As per IPL 2022 schedule, Delhi is scheduled to play Punjab Kings on Wednesday in Pune and the team’s travel plans have been stalled for now. No decision has been taken on the fate of the match yet.

Only if the team are unable to field 12 players—seven Indians, four foreigners, and one substitute—the BCCI would think of rescheduling the games.

With COVID cases rising outside the IPL bio-bubble, the virus threat inside the protected environment has also increased.

Last season, the tournament had to be suspended midway due to the second wave before it could be completed in the UAE in September-October.
