The Sri Lankan batter was arrested from the team hotel and is due to appear in court on Monday. The Sri Lankan cricket team who are currently in Australia playing T20 World Cup 2022 failed to make it to the T20 World Cup 2022 semi-finals after registering only 2 victories in the 5 matches they played.
Danushka Gunathilaka was earlier ruled out of the ongoing T20 World Cup with a hamstring injury but remained with the squad in Australia.
“SLC will closely monitor the proceedings in court and, in consultation with the ICC, will expeditiously initiate a thorough inquiry into the matter and take stern action against the player if found guilty,” SLC said in a statement.
The New South Wales police in a statement confirmed that Gunathilaka has been charged with four counts of sexual intercourse without consent.
“Yesterday (Saturday 5 November 2022), detectives from the State Crime Command’s Sex Crimes Squad and Eastern Suburbs Police Area Command commenced a joint investigation under Strike Force Veteran following reports a 29-year-old woman had been sexually assaulted at a residence in Rose Bay earlier this week,” NSW police said.
“The woman met with the man after communicating with him for a number of days via an online dating application; it’s alleged he then sexually assaulted her on the evening of Wednesday 2 November 2022.
“He was taken to Sydney City Police Station and charged with four counts of sexual intercourse without consent. The Sri Lankan national was refused bail to appear at Parramatta Bail Court via AVL today.”
Notably, in June 2021, Danushka Gunathilaka along with Kusal Mendis, and Niroshan Dickwella have been suspended for a bio-bubble breach in the UK.
New Zealand and England from Group 1 and Pakistan and India from Group 2 have qualified for the ICC T20 World Cup 2022 semi-finals. The final match of the tournament is scheduled to play on November 13 at Melbourne Cricket Ground, Melbourne.
