Cricket Australia Bans Dulip Samaraweera For 20 Years

Former Sri Lankan cricketer Dulip Samaraweera has been Banned from holding any position with Cricket Australia for 20 years over “inappropriate behavior.”

The 52-year-old has played seven tests and five ODIs in the 1990s and was later appointed as head coach of the Victoria state women’s team in May. He was alleged to an inappropriate behavior towards a women player.

Due to this, Cricket Australia’s Conduct Commission banned him from holding any position with CA or a state or territory association for 20 years.”

In a statement, it was cited as a serious breach of their code of conduct. While speaking about the incident, Cricket Victoria Chief Nick Cummins commended the bravery of the victim for speaking up.

“We strongly support the decision taken by the Code of Conduct Commission today, banning Dulip Samaraweera for 20 years,” Cummins told cricket.com.au.

“It is our view that the conduct was utterly reprehensible and a betrayal of everything we stand for at Cricket Victoria. The victim in this case has demonstrated incredible strength of character and courage in speaking up.”

“From an organization perspective, the safety and well-being of everyone at Cricket Victoria is paramount. We will not tolerate any behavior which compromises that position, or our people, and will always support our culture of speaking up.”

“During the recruitment process, Dulip had expressed a desire to make a specific coaching appointment in his support team. That appointment was unable to be facilitated due to internal policies we have in place. Following further conversations, Dulip decided he would prefer not to remain in the role,” said Cricket Victoria CEO Nick Cummins.

Cricket Australia said, “The CA Integrity Department investigates complaints brought to it under Integrity Codes and Policies which also apply to State & Territory Associations. The Conduct Commission hears matters referred to it by CA Integrity.”

“CA and CV are committed to providing a safe environment for all players and employees and the welfare of those subjected to mistreatment is paramount,” said Cricket Australia.
