Sri Lanka has had a prolific run in the last few months, securing a series of victories over England and South Africa for the first time ever in any format, apart from a historic Asia Cup win.
Athapaththu, being Sri Lanka’s highest run-getter in the format, recent months have shown that others on the side are more than capable of rendering match-winning performances.
Kavindi’s omission means Sri Lanka has just three main seam bowling options in their World Cup squad – Udeshika Prabodhani, Achini Kulasuriya, and Ama Kanchana.
While looking at the batting lineup, Athapaththu, with the likes of Harshitha Samarawickrama and 18-year-old Vishmi Gunaratne has also been among the run in the last few months.
Their victory in the Asia Cup will give them confidence that they can push them to the final stages of the T20 World Cup.
With the T20 World Cup 2024 set to begin on October 03, Sri Lanka will be playing their first match against Pakistan on October 03 at Sharjah Cricket Stadium.
