The West Indies Legendary cricketer Brian Lara has identified his successors who could surpass his Test cricket records in the upcoming years.
The West Indies batter Brian Lara has backed Indian youngsters Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill to break his world record of the highest individual score of 400 in tests. He registered his name in record books as he scored 400* runs against England on 12 April 2004 at Antigua Recreation Ground, St John’s Antigua.
Additionally, he has registered an unbeaten 501 during a first-class fixture in 1994 and holds the highest individual tally in the format.
He surpassed Australian batter Matthew Hayden’s score of 380 achieved against Zimbabwe in October 2003. Ever since, Lara recorded for highest individual score, the record has been unbroken despite batters across the world scoring 11 triple hundreds in international cricket in time period.
Speaking about his record, Lara said several legendary players like Virender Sehwag, Chris Gayle, and Sanath Jayasuriya have challenged his record in the past.
“There were players in my time who challenged, or at least went past the 300 mark – Virender Sehwag, Chris Gayle, Inzam-ul-Haq, Sanath Jayasuriya. They were pretty much aggressive players,” told Lara on media.
Further speaking ahead on the topic, he named England batters Zak Crawley, Harry Brook, and Indian batters Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal who could surpass his records in the future.
“How many aggressive players do you have playing today? Especially in the England team. Zak Crawley and Harry Brook. Maybe in the Indian team? Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill. If they find the right situation, the records could be broken – both of them,” he added.
Zak Crawley who has transformed his batting style under Ben Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum and has the highest score of 267 in Tests. On the other hand, Harry Brook has an impressive average of 62.15 and a strike rate of 91.76. He has the highest score of 186 in his test career so far.
On the other hand, Yashasvi Jaiswal has been one of the prominent players having two double-hundreds during England’s tour of India in 2024. The left-hander has 1028 runs in 16 innings in his Test career at an average of 68.53.
Shubman Gill has a good start to his test career as he scored a match-winning 91 runs against Australia on Day 05 of the Gabba Test. In 25 matches he scored 1492 with an average of 35.52 with four centuries and six fifties.
David Warner was the recent player to score a triple century who smashed 335 runs against Pakistan at the Adelaide Oval in 2019. But, Australian captain Tim Paine declared the innings before Warner could surpass Brian Lara’s high score.
