Ben Stokes to Play for Superchargers in The Hundred
Ben Stokes is set to make his comeback in the upcoming edition of The Hundred as he will be playing for Andrew Flintoff’s Northern Superchargers. The talismanic all-rounder will join the squad after the completion of the West Indies tour of England in 2024.
Stokes made two appearances for the Superchargers in the 2021 season but has not played after taking over England’s test captaincy. Apart from Stokes, Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Ollie Pope, Joe Root, Harry Brook and Jamie Smith who are currently involved in the West Indies tour of England 2024 will join the respective teams in The Hundred.
He has instead opted to rest between test series after struggling with a chronic knee injury which he had surgery after the ODI World Cup last year. He suffered a panic attack in July 2021 when he collapsed on the floor of the hotel bathroom.
He will be available for four group stage games ensuring the club qualifies for the knockout stages. The presence of top cricketers will undoubtedly enhance the level of competition in The Hundred. Youngsters like Gus Atkinson, Matthew Potts, and Dillon Pennington are likely to feature from the start of the tournament, while Chris Woakes will join from August 06.
Players who will be picked for the first test against Sri Lanka at Emirates on August 21 will be available for the eliminators and Final which are scheduled for August 17 and 18.
Coming to the Women’s tournament, England’s players have to be prepared to showcase their skills, with their international duties finished for the summer. On the other hand, Deepti Sharma, Australia’s Kim Garth New Zealand’s Tim Southee, and Mitchell Santner have been included in men’s and women’s competitions respectively.
The men’s competition will begin with Oval Invincibles taking on Birmingham Phoenix on July 24 at the Kennington Oval, London.
