BCCI Set to Announce Retention Rules after IPL GC Meeting

The IPL retention Rules for the IPL 2025 mega auctions are likely to be announced after the Governing Council Meeting in Bengaluru on Saturday.

The IPL GC meeting will take place at the Four Seasons in Bengaluru at 11:30 AM IST. The meeting was arranged on Friday and there’s a probability that after all the matters including retention rules are discussed.

The IPL GC meeting was a last-minute decision as the invitation for the meeting was sent only on Friday evening to the members.

With an announcement expected after the meeting, there are speculations that the announcement of the retention policy will come to an end with an announcement before they are made public on Sunday.

The BCCI’s 93rd Annual General Body Meeting (AGM) will take place in Bengaluru on September 29.

Apart from deciding on the number of retentions, the Governing Council meetings are also expected to take a call on the IPL 2025 Mega Auction Date and Venue.

With the reports suggesting the auction to take place at the end of November, the governing council led by IPL chairman Arun Dhamal will decide the place and date for the event.

Saudi Arabia is also believed to host the auction and if the GC approves, it may be even held in Riyadh.

With many speculations revolving around the number of retentions per team ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction, the BCCI might settle with 5-6, including the RTM option.

In July, BCCI had a meeting with IPL franchise owners to discuss matters related to the league, including retentions and get the feedback of the owners.

The Right to Match (RTM) card option will be discussed. Reports are suggesting BCCI could do away with such a rule for the mega auction as a lot of franchises have expressed their desire against such a rule.

5-6 retentions per team could favour teams like Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians who have invested in young players. Mumbai will be able to retain all of Rohit Sharma, Hardik Pandya, Suryakumar Yadav and Jasprit Bumrah while CSK will be hoping to retain Ravindra Jadeja, Ruturaj Gaikwad, MS Dhoni, Rachin Ravindra.
