BCCI likely to increase uncapped players retention in IPL 2025

BCCI is likely to increase the uncapped players retention in IPL 2025 by allowing franchises to retain 2-3 uncapped players.

Ahead of the last mega auction(2022), BCCI allowed the original eight teams to retain a maximum of two uncapped players while the two new teams – Gujarat Titans and Lucknow Super Giants could have one.

As a team, the franchise puts considerable effort into scouting an uncapped player. As these players execute impressive performances in consecutive seasons, the franchise’s efforts in sharpening the uncapped players go in vain during a mega auction.

As per the current IPL mega auction retention policy, a team can retain a maximum of 4 players before the auction. They can either go for a maximum of 3 Indian players or a maximum of 2 overseas players. The three Indians retained can all be capped or be uncapped or a mix of both.

The existing retention window allows the team to retain a maximum of three Indians in a mix.

But the franchise has put forward some suggestions to the board, one of which is to either create a special allowance within the main retention pool for uncapped talent or increase the number of RTM cards, with which a team can match the winning bid at the auction for a player they had on their rolls till the previous season and bring him back in.

As per reports, the BCCI is willing to provide a separate slot which can allow multiple uncapped players to be retained. And as a result, all teams are likely to push for the rule in today’s meeting with the apex cricketing body of the country.

“Every franchise could be allowed to retain, say, two-three uncapped players from their squad in the 2024 IPL season under an additional slot. The franchises are likely to push for it. Almost all the franchises have developed certain uncapped players which they don’t want to lose since they have invested in them over the last two-three years” the report in TOI reads.

Along with the retention rules, BCCI is set to discuss the Impact Player Rule in the upcoming meeting. According to a report, the meeting will take place on July 31 at 07:30 PM in the BCCI office on the fourth floor of the Wankhede Stadium Complex.
