BCCI Likely to Allow 5 Retentions and 1 RTM Ahead of IPL 2025 Mega Auction

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is likely to allow the franchises to have 5 Retentions and 1 RTM for the upcoming IPL 2025 Mega Auction.

The highly expected announcement regarding the new IPL retention rules for the 2025 auction as the IPL GC meeting is set to convene today.

While a formal decision might take up to one day, there is a possibility that the announcement might be revealed in the next few hours.

The IPL Governing Council meeting has been scheduled to be held on September 28 at the Bengaluru. The IPL GC meeting was a last-minute decision as the invitation for the meeting was sent only on Friday evening to the members.

With an announcement expected after the meeting, there are speculations that the announcement of the retention policy will come to an end with an announcement before they are made public on Sunday.

In addition to the announcement of IPL Retention players, the council is expected to decide IPL 2025 mega auction date and venue.

Currently, the auction is scheduled to be held at the end of November at Gulf City. Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia has also expressed interest, and if the GC approves, it may be even held in Riyadh.

With speculation about the retention rules, the predictions on the numbers for retentions vary from 2-8 players. However, a report suggests that BCCI might settle for 5-6 retentions including RTM (Right to Match).

5-6 retentions per team could favour teams like Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians who have invested in young players. Mumbai will be able to retain all of Rohit Sharma, Hardik Pandya, Suryakumar Yadav and Jasprit Bumrah while CSK will be hoping to retain Ravindra Jadeja, Ruturaj Gaikwad, MS Dhoni, Rachin Ravindra.

In July, BCCI had a meeting with IPL franchise owners to discuss matters related to the league, including retentions and get the feedback of the owners.
