Chief National Selector in BCCI Chetan Sharma resigns from the post on February 17, 2023, after a TV news channel sting operation surfaced on the internet and media where he shared internal information about the Indian team and selection process.
BCCI Chief Selector Chetan Sharma Resigns
Chetan Sharma made his first-class debut for Punjab at the age of 17 and appeared in ODIs a year later. He was the first man to take a hat trick in the ODI world cup. He achieved this feat in the 1987 Reliance World Cup against New Zealand.
In December 2020, he was elected as Chairman of the selection committee of the Indian cricket team. Later in November 2022, he was sacked from the position post India’s exit from the Cricket World Cup. However, he was re-appointed to the same post upon applying for it.
Chetan Sharma’s downfall starts when he got filmed in a sting operation which alleged that Indian cricketers take injections to expedite their return to the national team, despite being only 80 to 85 % fit.
He also states that Virat Kohli lied to the media in 2021 regarding his ODI captaincy removal. On that note, Kohli said that BCCI removed him from the ODI captaincy without any discussion with him. Chetan Sharma claims that Virat Kohli made this move to defame then BCCI president Sourav Ganguly.
According to a news agency, Sharma sent his resignation to BCCI Secretary Jay Shah who accepted it.
“No player or selector will be comfortable on sharing a cordial relationship even with well meaning journalists after this sting as the trust factor has been compromised,” a senior BCCI source PTI on conditions of anonymity.
It has been learned that Chetan may be given an opportunity to defend himself, but whether he will be able to face Rohit Sharma or Hardik Pandya is still uncertain. The more pressing question is whether the players would be willing to engage with him.
