Bangladesh Seeks Army’s Assurance for Women’s T20 World Cup 2024

The Bangladesh Cricket Board has requested security assurance from Army’s chief for the Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 which is scheduled to begin on October 03.

The ICC is examining the situation due to political instability after PM Sheikh Hasina fled the country. The tournament is set to be held in Sylhet and Mirpur amid political riots following the resignation of former PM.

According to reports, BCB’s letter to General Waker-Uz-Zaman seeks confirmation on the security measures necessary for organizing the event. The ICC is closely monitoring the situation after violent protests led to hundreds of deaths and forced the former PM to flee the country.

On the other hand, Alternate venues like India, UAE, and Sri Lanka have considered if security guarantees cannot be met. Despite BCB directors remain hopeful of hosting the T20 World Cup within the country.

BCB’s umpiring committee chairman Iftekhar Ahmed Mithun reiterated the board’s commitment to ensure the tournament proceeds as planned, pending only security assurances from the army chief.

“We are trying to host the tournament. To be honest, there are not too many among us present in the country, and on Thursday (August 8) we sent a letter to the Army Chief regarding assurance about the security of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup as we have only two months in hand,” said Iftikhar Ahmed.

“ICC communicated with us two days back and we replied that we will come back to them shortly.” “After the (interim) government is formed, still we have to give them assurance of the security considering it cannot be given by the board or any anyone else apart from a law enforcement agency of the country and so we sent the letter and after getting written assurance from them (the Army), we will inform the ICC,” he added.

After the former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned and fled to India, the country’s law and order deteriorated greatly. Later the situation improved a lot with the help of student society and others.

The law and order situation in the country is improving as 13 advisers of the interim government under the leadership of Dr. Muhammad Yunus.
