Bangladesh handed Sri Lanka their second defeat of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 in a low-scoring thriller at Dallas on June 7. Sri Lanka played their first match of the tournament against South Africa and lost the game by 6 wickets.
Bangladesh on the other hand, played their first game of the tournament after a series loss against the United States played the previous month.
In today’s game against Sri Lanka, Bangladesh executed an all-rounding performance and registered their first victory of the tournament by beating Sri Lanka in a thrilling low-scoring game.
Speaking of the game, Bangladesh won the toss and opted to bowl first where Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Mendis opened the inning for Sri Lanka.
As of their first match of the tournament, Sri Lankan opening batters once again failed to make an impressive performance. Sri Lanka lost their first wicket after scoring just 21 runs.
Bangladesh’s Taskin Ahmed drew the first blood for Sri Lanka by dismissing Kusal Mendis for 10. Though SL lost their first wicket at an early stage of the match, Nissanka poses a great threat with his timing knocks.
Nissanka scored 16 runs in the fifth over bowled by Shakib Al Hasan and moved Lanka near fifty runs mark. But Mustafizur in his very first delivery dismissed Kamindu Mendis and broke the partnership.
Sri Lankan batters struggled to face Bangladesh bowlers and lost their wickets in a regular intervals of time. Their 30-run partnership for the 4th wicket was the highest stand for Sri Lanka.
Mustafizur Rahman played a vital role by bagging three wickets for 17 runs at an economy of 4.20. Along with him, Rishad Hossain also bagged three wickets for 22 runs at an economy of 5.50.
Taskin Ahmed bagged a couple of wickets and Tanzim Hasan Sakib bagged a wicket and helped in the team’s performance. Shakib Al Hasan and Mahmudullah returned wicketless.
At the end of 20 overs, Sri Lanka scored 124 runs for 9 wickets loss. While chasing Bangladesh lost three wickets for 28 and made an unpleasant start.
But Litton Das and Towhid Hridoy made a 63-run stand and moved Bangladesh’s score towards a safer zone. But Hridoy and Litton’s back-to-back dismissals added pressure on the Bangladesh players.
With Mahmudullah’s handy 16 runs, Bangladesh chased down the target with an over left to bowl. Rishad Hossain was crowned the Player of the Match for his match-winning three-wicket haul.
Bangladesh will play their next match of the tournament against South Africa on June 10 in New York while Sri Lanka will play their next game of the tournament against Nepal on June 12 in Florida.
