Ashwin appeared nearly in tears as Virat Kohli shared an embrace with him in the Indian dressing room while rain stopped the play at Gabba on the fifth day of the third test of the Border Gavaskar Trophy.
The visuals has sparked speculation of a retirement announcment of the spinner. Ashwin was not part of India’s playing 11 in the Gabba test, but played in Adelaide, where he picked up one wicket and made knocks of 22 and 7 each.
The Indian top order batters failed to put up a fight, as KL Rahul and Ravindra Jadeja as the due scored crucial fifties and the visitors also got massive contributions from Akash Deep and Jasprit Bumrah. KL Rahul (84 runs) and all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja (77 runs) left telling contributions.
India resumed on 252-9 in reply to the hosts 445 after the 10th wicket partnership between Jasprit Bumrah and Akash added 47 runs for the 10th wicket as their contribution helped India to avoid the follow-on.
India was all out for 260 runs after Akash Deep’s dismissal by Travis Head.
Australia was reduced to 33/5 in just 11 overs as Indian bowlers fought back hard. Bumrah’s opening spell has took two important wickets and helped India get back into the game after Australia had taken a commanding lead of 221 runs in the first innings.
Australia scored 89 runs for 7 wickets before declaring their innings and setting up a target of 275 for India. However, after rain interrupted India’s innings, the match concluded in a draw at The Gabba.
